trimsies
Fabric recommendations for Trimsies Diapers:

OUTER:
  • For a waterproof (AIO/AI2) diaper - PUL
  • For a non-waterproof (fitted) diaper - one layer of: cotton knit, cotton woven, bamboo velour, cotton velour, minkee, flannel or other soft fabric.
HIDDEN LAYER (optional) - A hidden layer can be added to waterproof or non-waterproof trainers to boost the absorbency. One layer of flannel, cotton interlock, bamboo velour, or other thin absorbent fabric works best.

INNER:
  • For a stay-dry inner - 1 layer of: suedecloth, microfleece, or microchamois
  • For a non-stay-dry inner - 1 layer of bamboo velour, cotton velour, flannel, birdseye, cotton knit, or other soft fabric.
SOAKER/DOUBLER:
The layers noted below are for the soaker only, they can also be used in the doubler, thus doubling the number of layers. The soaker can also be topped with soft layers such as bamboo velour or stay-dry layers such as microfleece.
  • Bamboo fleece (this varies depending on if you have lightweight or heavyweight): 2-4 layers is a good starting point
  • Hemp fleece: 2-3 layers (4 layers is the max you'd want to use, as it gets pretty hard to sew more than that and takes a long time to dry)
  • Flannel: 4-6 layers (more than 6 layers sewn together takes too long to dry in my opinion)
  • Birdseye: 3-6 layers
  • Microfiber: 1-3 layers
Tip: Cut the soaker and doubler as one long piece joined in the center. There are several photos in the Gallery illustrating this technique.

  • For a waterproof outer - PUL
  • For a water resistant outer - polyester fleece, anti-pill fleece, windpro fleece
  • For a non-waterproof outer - one layer of: cotton knit, cotton woven, bamboo velour, cotton velour, minkee, flannel or other soft fabric.
HIDDEN LAYER (optional) - A hidden layer can be added to waterproof or non-waterproof trainers to boost the absorbency. One layer of flannel, cotton interlock, bamboo velour, or other thin absorbent fabric works best.

  • For a non-stay-dry inner - 1 layer of bamboo velour, cotton velour, flannel, birdseye, cotton knit, or other soft fabric.
SOAKER (use less layers for a light wetter and more layers for a heavy wetter):
  • Bamboo fleece (this varies depending on if you have lightweight or heavyweight): 2-4 layers is a good starting point
  • Hemp fleece: 2-3 layers (4 layers is the max you'd want to use, as it gets pretty hard to sew on and takes a long time to dry)

  • Birdseye: 3-6 layers
  • Microfiber: 1-3 layers
If you need additional absorbency, such as for overnight, you can make the trainer with a pocket and use additional inserts.

Trimsies Trainer Examples

Using the higher-rise overnight style:
   PUL outer
Bamboo velour or microfleece inner with a pocket
   6 layer birdseye soaker
Plus an infant prefold (trifolded and inserted into the pocket)
(This particular combination is very trim and very absorbent even for a heavy wetter overnight)

Waterproof, day-time trainer:
   PUL outer
   Bamboo velour (OBV) inner
Soaker: 6 layers of unbleached birdseye

Waterproof, day-time trainer:
   PUL outer
   Microchamois inner
Soaker: 2 layers of bamboo fleece

Non-waterproof, day-time trainer:
   Cotton knit outer
   Cotton velour inner
   Soaker: 2 layers of microfiber

Water resistant wool trainer:
Wool outer (wool interlock, wool jersey, recycled soft 100% wool/cashmere sweater)
Wool inner (wool interlock, wool jersey, recycled soft 100% wool/cashmere sweater)
Snap-in Soaker: 2 layers of bamboo fleece

Eco-friendly non-waterproof, day-time trainer:
Cut up your old soft t-shirts and flannels sheets - they make wonderful trainers!
Outer: Upcycled cotton t-shirt fabric or cotton flannel sheet
Inner: Upcycled cotton t-shirt fabric or cotton flannel sheet
Soaker: 2 layers of 100% cotton sweatshirt fleece or 4 layers of cotton flannel (old sheet)
